How Much Salad To Serve a Crowd?

Use My Serving Size Calculator!

Finally- the ultimate tool for figuring out how much salad to prepare for a large group of people. Whether you are hosting a meal, going to a potluck, or catering a big or small event the major question on your mind is how much salad are people going to eat? It’s a fair question. You need to be conservative enough to save money, reduce wasted food, but still make sure everyone gets to taste your amazing salad!

I have made the Salad Serving Calculator for just this reason. It will tell you how many pounds of salad greens you will need, how much toppings (slices fruits, veggies, nuts, cheeses etc) and how much dressing will be needed to cover all of that! You can dial up or dial back the serving size based on your particular crowd (Rabbits vs. Lions, so to speak).

Tips for serving Salad to a Crowd

  1. Add dressing at servings time (not before!). You can do this by tossing the salad right at serving or allowing guests to add their own dressing.

  2. If you want to be able to enjoy leftovers - do not pre-dressing your salad. It will not store well for later enjoyment if it has already been doused in dressing

  3. Consider the rest of the meal when thinking about how much salad to serve. “Is it particularly heavy?” “Are people serving themselves or are you portioning each plate out?”

  4. When serving a salad, don’t let those good toppings sink to the bottom of the bowl!

  5. Keep greens in an airtight container in the fridge until serving time. (being exposed or in an open bowl in the fridge would spell disaster for your salad greens!)
